Your Money or Your Life

Medical experts warn that it’s too soon to relax the fight against coronavirus, and that we need to continue social distancing to finish the war on the pandemic. We’re not done till the number of new cases is significantly reduced. Common sense, right? Don’t need a medical degree to understand this concept.
Donald Trump wants to open up the country in time for Easter so businesses can get back to making money. Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick says we should get back to work before businesses are lost, even if it means lives are lost. Glenn Beck wants to keep young people safely at home and send all the over-fifties back to work. While he acknowledges that could kill many in the senior crowd, he claims he would “rather die than kill the country.” Says Mr. Beck from his cozy studio.
This issue is pretty much divided down political lines, Democratic politicians in favor of continuing safety measures designed to protect everyone from COVID-19; Republican politicians interested only in younger generations and businesses, their base exerting enormous pressure to “get things back to normal”.
Well, there you have it. A society that thinks it’s okay to kill unborn babies will have no qualms about killing its aged next. After that, or in sync with it, will be the physically and mentally impaired. Those of us who joined the fight to oppose abortion during the 1960s made this argument, which fell on deaf ears. When you cease to value human life above all else, you lose your humanity.
While I’m not surprised to see our current political leadership endorse money over life, what does surprise me is their openness about it. Every election cycle, Republican politicians resurrect the abortion issue. They know it drives a wedge between people and pulls their base in line, which gets them a lot of votes that they otherwise probably wouldn’t have.
And after elections, the abortion issue is again put on the back burner. Nothing effective to stop it ever gets done. Our current administration has used the issue to grab judicial seats, creating an unbalanced representation of socio-economic needs. But they haven’t stopped abortions, and now they’re advocating the potential destruction of another percentage of the population. We are not truly pro-life until we protect all human life, both unborn and born.
